The government getting multiple bids for the sale of Air India, including from Tata Group, is a relief. It shows that, given attractive terms, there’s value in AI even during such dire circumstances for the aviation business. Government should now ensure politics or bureaucracy doesn’t stop this disinvestment from taking-off..

Police must not get caught in Mamata-BJP political tug-of-war before polarising Bengal elections

Mamata Banerjee government’s refusal to send three IPS officers on central deputation violates the rules governing this service, and in bad faith. Centre’s summon to them after attack on BJP chief JP Nadda’s motorcade is also political. The police can’t get caught in this tug-of-war before a crucial, polarising elections.

  1. Shri Ratan Tata should be given both the Maharajah and a Bharat Ratna. Vaise agar Air India ko nationalise nahin kiya hota toh kitna achha hota. The same can be said about the banks.

  2. All India Service officers serving in their cadres move to the Centre voluntarily. The consent of both the officer and the state government is the norm. In states like Maharashtra, an IAS officer could retire as Chief Secretary without ever having worked in Delhi. Those assigned to less favoured cadres like the north east cannot wait to complete their cooling off period to return to the Centre. To compulsorily summon IPS officers on Central deputation – against their wishes and without the consent of the state government – goes contrary to the spirit of cooperative federalism. 2. A happier precedent exists. Shri Sanjay Mitra of the 1982 batch, worked in Dr Singh’s PMO, appointed CS by CM Mamata Banerjee at a young age, later moving to Delhi as Secretary, Road Transport, then retiring as Defence Secretary. It makes no difference to such an upright officer which formation is in power in Delhi or the state. There are norms, conventions, courtesies, being created since the dawn of the Republic. Those should be respected, built upon. All power is transient.
